AN OPEN LETTER TO THE SECRETARY GENERAL OF THE UNITED NATIONS
NIGERIA: IMPENDING CHAOS AND ANARCHY
The Honorable Ambassador Ban Ki moon,
Secretary General, United Nations
United
Dear Ambassador K i - moon,
For more than 45 days now the President of the most populous country in Africa, the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Alhaji Umaru YarAdua , has not been seen in public. According to Press Reports, President YarAdua is receiving treatment in a Saudi Arabian hospital. There has been no real - time direct audio or video communication between the President and the Nigerian people
that he leads. As an amiable politician dedicated to making change in the polity, we pray and wish him a speedy and full recovery.
However, Nigeria appears to be on hold! We do not know anywhere in the free world where this situation is allowed to persist when we have a time tested and able Vice President in the person of Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, who can assume the functions of the Presidency but for polyglot hegemonies and sectarian interest groups. All members of the two Arms of Government and the Military know this for a fact. Yet, Nigerians are watching like mere spectators and unable to nip a potentially explosive situation in the bud.
It is increasingly imperative to make the following observations: If Vice President Goodluck Jonathan were to be from a different geo-political region other than the Niger Delta [whose people are periodically brutalized by the Federal Government of Nigeria and their petroleum resources taken away without adequate compensation or development of the area], would the office of the Vice President be treated with contempt? If President YarAdua were to be from a different geo-political region other than the core northern part of Nigeria and found himself in similar circumstances beyond his control, would the country be allowed to operate without a President? Any major medical procedure in which the Presidents health would be significantly impacted requires a temporary transfer of power to his Vice President.
We wonder how long this political spectacle and brigandage would be allowed to continue. It seems every one is watching potential chaos and anarchy in the making. We warn that a good
Percentage of the worlds energy supply would be gravely affected as well as many governments and economies of West African sub region if the Nigerian situation is allowed to degenerate any further.
As the world watches, we wish to state categorically that any military coup staged in Nigeria that is designed to circumvent the Nigerian Constitution and enthrone a new leadership will not be accepted by the Niger Delta people.
We hereby implore you to use the good offices of the United Nations to prevent the impending chaos and anarchy in Nigeria.
Thank you and God bless.
