THE OKORO MATTER
AND THE GOLDEN RULE OF
INTER-ETHNIC RELATIONS
By
Dr. Smith T.M. Omonuwa
The piece by Agidigbi stretches history and the imagination, to say the least. It shows a lot of ignorance and insensitivity on his part. You stretch the imagination further when you suggest "Edo-phobia" as the reason anyone might respond differently to his piece. The Golden Rule philosophy demands that we wish for others the same amount of good that we wish for ourselves. It is against the rule to add to your glory by diminishing that of others.
I am not a historian, but life has taught me this much: the achievements of our ancestors are not genetically transmitted. You have no personal claim to the glories you sing, if you do not add your own achievements; you must seek to achieve your own goals in this lifetime and maybe, after that, the Edos may claim you as their own, if they value your contribution. Even if they value them now, there is no guarantee they will value them for all times. Until then, my dear friend, seek that which unites and builds. That is what we should all do, all of us.
