URHOBO HISTORICAL SOCIETY

 BEN  OKRI

Urhobo Historical Society's immense interest in Ben Okri is homegrown. His native town of Ughelli is a major Urhobo enclave of cultural and historical significance for Urhobos. Ben Okri's family is well known to many members of Urhobo Historical Society, including its Secretary whose family has old ties with the Okri family. His secondary school experience was at Urhobo College, which was founded, built, and managed by Urhobo Progress Union, Urhobo's revered cultural organization that is associated with Chief Mukoro Mowoe, Urhobo's premier nationalist.. Ben Okri's main characters not only bear Urhobo names, such as Omovo; in many instances, they resonate the manners, achievements, dilemmas, and failures of Urhobo culture. In Ben Okri's writings, many Urhobos see themselves fully displayed to the world by one of their own who has been endowed by the Creator with extraordinary gifts.
